COOKING – Is it an Art, a Science, or a Pain

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

For me, cooking has always been fun. I started cooking in
my younger day back in Nebraska. Luckily, my mother was
patient enough to teach me. For my wife, she’s glad I have
fun doing it. What is your vote? Do you cook for
pleasure, or necessity?
If you have the right equipment, a comfortable kitchen,
and are willing to try different things, cooking can be
fun. Having someone to clean up after you helps, too.
Most ovens are self-cleaning now, so being a little sloppy
pulling your cooked item out of the oven isn’t quite so
critical. You just wipe up what you can, and self-clean
sometime in the future.
Academy is to provide food and cooking schools
level of education you want. You can take only a Dim Sum
class or get a degree in Culinary Arts. There are online
courses and courses by mail. The choice is yours. There
Catering, gourmet cooking classes are online
through Penn Foster Career School.
There are many methods of cooking. Dry-heat cooking
methods without fat are broiling, roasting or baking,
grilling, barbecuing, griddling, and pan-broiling.
Fat dry cleaning, and cooking methods that Panfuraipansote
and deep-frying. Moist heat cooking methods are steaming,
boiling, simmering, poaching, and blanching. Broiling is
a method using high heat. My favorite is outdoor cooking.
There is also crock-pot cooking, which is an easy way to
prepare a full meal.
In front of me, someone would have the right cooking equipment
the task of cooking a lot easier. I use the nonstick pans
versus the stainless steel variety. They are easier to
clean up. Other materials used for cookware is copper,
aluminum, stainless steel, cast iron, glass, ceramics,
Plastic and enamel. Pan lined with enamel should not be
be used for cooking. The enamel can crack or chip. After
a variety of sizes for cookware makes the cooking process
Much easier. A good knife set is necessary, also.
Must be sharp and easy to store both for safety reasons
to use. Use the correct knife for the specific job being
done. A paring knife wouldn’t work to well trying to cut
through bone.
Being educated in food safety should also be a
consideration. You don’t want your family to get Vibrio
parahaemolyticus Gastroenteritis from eating raw oysters.
(Spelling or pronunciation is not a priority for cooking.)
You don’t need to get a ServSafe Food Safety Manager
Certification, but a basic understanding of food safety
should be learned. Some foods are more likely to become
unsafe than others. Some potentially hazardous food would
be milk, eggs, shellfish, fish, baked potatoes, sliced
melon, meats, and poultry.
Bon Appetit!

Beginnert Cooks can Become Master Chefs Using the Slow Cooker

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Slow cookers are a great piece of equipment to have in your home. Not only does it save time, it also produces great, well-cooked, great tasting meals. There are some who have not used a slow cooker however, so for those few who haven?t, here is some practical information.

A few will definetly be skeptical of the slow cooker?s safety, as it must be kept on for quite a significant number of hours. So, if your concern is about safety, the answer is no worries, the machine is safe. The slow cooker cooks at a low temperature, usually somewhere between 170 to 280 degrees Fahrenheit. Also, the electricity used from a slow cooker is significantly lesser that if you use an conventional over.
About the cooking temperature type dishes, one of the great things is that when cooking the meat of non-gold division, they would like the Prime Minister of the reduction of conventional method of cooking very expensive. In addition, in terms of security, when it comes to food, direct heating, the time it takes to prepare your meals, which is locked within a tight lid of the pot of steam to kill harmful bacteria in food.
Ok, getting to the cooking procedures. As is normal when handling any kind of food, one should start with a clean work space and clean implements. Wash your hands thoroughly prior to handling any food and leave your meats in the refrigerator until such time which they need to be added. Bacteria produces at a quick pace at room temperature so make sure that your slow cooker is preheated a little prior to adding the meat to your dish from the refrigerator. You may use the vegetables ahead of the meat because they usually cook not as fast as than meats. It is important to note though that meats must be defrosted prior to being placed in a slow cooker for better results.
Ideally meals which should be prepared in a slow cooker are those which are moist such as soups, stews or pot roasts so it will not dry out. Remember as well that a big slow cooker should not be used to produce single servings of food or it will risk being overcooked. A cooker ideally should be filled about half of the container capacity, but not to exceed 2/3. While running do not open the cooker as much as possible, only doing so to check if it?s done, or to mix the dish. Opening the lid brings down the temperature suddenly and will affect the doneness of your dish.
When contemplating on the cooking setting to use on your slow cooker, you have to take into consideration the amount of time that you?re going to be cooking it. For stubborn meat cuts, a greaterlonger preparation time utilizing a low setting is desirable. However a helpful tip is to put the setting at max for the first hour, then set it to low for the remaining hours. If for any reason the power shuts off midway through cooking your dish, finish fixing it on your stove. If your meal has sat at room temperature for a bit of time half-done, your meal might be safer to just toss this batch away and begin again.
Once you have a successful dish cooked, transfer the contents of the time. Remove the tank, thoroughly cleansed, and to ensure that it is the store dry.
