Have you ever considered just how much our diets have changes over the last 50 to 100 years, or how much our health is connected to the types of food we consume. With the majority of us eating on the run and looking for a quick way to produce a meal for our families, we thought it would be interesting to take a look at the modern diet. Without doing a lot of research to substantiate the exact date of introduction into the food supply, lets take a look at the approximate time frame of some of our most common food items.
If my memory serves me right, most neighborhoods started seeing an influx of McDonalds and other fast food restaurants somewhere around the mid nineteen seventies. Sure there were some McDonalds and other fast food joints before this time, but we’re talking about when this industry started to become mainstream. Early to mid seventies just about hits it right!
Soda drinking falls along the same lines as the fast food industry. There is no doubt that sodas were created much earlier, but when did it become commonplace to consume this sugary beverage on a daily basis? It was around 1965 that soda’s “previously thought of as occasional treats” were dispensed in cans from vending machines. Today, sodas account for at least a third of the liquid consumed in the US. On average a 12 oz can of soda, is equivalent to 10 teaspoons of sugar. When you consider that many people drink them non-stop throughout the day, that’s a lot of sugar.
Sugar consumption in the early 20 th century average of about five pounds. Today, according to the USDA, the number is estimated that 140-170 pounds per year somewhere. Of a concern! Refined sugar, contains vitamins and minerals. Have zero nutritional value. Since then, due to the self-regulatory body, the body's metabolism of sugar to help the system will be called at the store's unique micronutrients. Some sugar, inhibiting the immune system, which contributes to almost every disease known to the people.
Since its introduction into the food supply, about 50 rules are used in monosodium glutamate increases a year ago. Hard this most processing additives / or boxed foods, I would be pressed to find as many canned. Notorious for fast food restaurants, are added to the source of this chemical. MSG in the food industry is only worth, folks, is attractive because the taste of foods and to eat more. Evidence is easy to MSG animals become obese and type 2 diabetes indicate feedback.
Artificial sweetener aspartame in 1980 entered the food supply early. Adverse reactions to food additives and their use in diet carbonated beverages account for 75 percent of the other diet products, FDA has reported. Products, Insutantoburekkufasuto drinks and other beverages, cereals, desserts, candy, food, pharmaceutical, sugar, aspartame can include anything from a much more include free product.
Both MSG and sweet excitotoxins. They stimulate the nerve receptors in the brain, so that brain cells communicate with each other. This stimulation led to their deaths, and may cause brain damage. Science has shown that exposure to these substances in the brain can produce symptoms of Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. The use of these products is also linked to cancer.
Antibiotics came into wide spread use in the 1950′s. In the 1960′s they were introduced in livestock production. Today 3 million lbs of antibiotics are utilized for humans per year, while approximately 25 million lbs are used on livestock There is evidence that this over consumption of antibiotics in animals (as well as humans) is contributing to bacterial resistance. Taking antibiotics also decreases your “good bacterial army” which accounts for 75% of your immune system. This assault can leave you open to additional infections and yeast overgrowth which can result in ever declining health. Yeast overgrowth is often called the great mimicker because it can imitate many diseases.
But lets say you eat a healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables and only the best of meat, poultry and fish. Evidence has shown the our soils are depleted in trace minerals. This mineral depletion existed in the early part of the last century, as evidenced by the US Senate Document 264, 74th Congress in 1936 Second Session.
Here is a partial quote from that document:
"This is bad news, from the leading authorities learned in the United States 99% of people lack access to these minerals, and minerals in any of the more important practical outcome of the disease, is clearly insufficient. Any balance, resulting in greater damage to the lack of a or another element, however microscopic the body requirement may be, we are sick, suffering, shorten our lives. "
A recent article on ABC News by Megan Carpenter validated this continuing trend when the article revealed that “recently grown crops have shown decreases of up to 38 percent in protein, calcium, vitamin C, phosphorus, iron and riboflavin when compared with produce from past decades.”
When you consider other food additives, radiation, pesticides, nitrates, trans fat and hydrogenated fats along with the changes in agriculture, food processing and lifestyle there is no wonder why people are dealing with the explosion of health conditions that we are today. Are we manufacturing sickness! You bet we are!

How Green Are Your Skin Care Products?
Monday, March 1st, 2010Everyday we wash down millions of gallons of chemicals down the drain. These chemicals come from cleaning agents, industrial and agricultural sources, and skin care products just to name a few. These chemicals disrupt aquatic ecosystems, seep into underground water sources and contribute to the endangerment of marine life and wildlife. Additionally, most communities get their drinking water from surface sources such as lakes, rivers, and reservoirs, and while our drinking water is filtered through a water treatment facility, traces of chemicals still remain.
Have you and the environment, select the green skin care products, has many advantages. First of all, the green skin care products do not include harmful ingredients, such as:
1,4 – dioxane: a known animal carcinogen, known to irritate the eyes and respiratory tract, which is suspected to cause damage to the central nervous system.
Phthalates: studies show that birth defects, and harm of male reproductive organs of these reasons. Unfortunately, loopholes in the law in the United States refers to phthalates in products, fragrance, including those without the actual label.
Parabens: These are common preservatives which can mimic the hormone estrogen, which can increase the risk of developmental breast cancer and urogenital abnormalities. A recent study by the Environmental Working Group just completed a study of hormone disrupting chemicals in skin care products and teen age girls. You can read that report at Environmental Working Group on the web.
Triclosan: This is classified by the EPA as probable human carcinogen and its overuse could result in drug development-resistant bacteria. This chemical is commonly found in anti-bacterial soaps and detergents. You can read more about this chemical overuse and create super-germs on Squidoo Lens title.

Hormone Replacement Therapy
Thursday, February 18th, 2010Bone Effects. Estrogen has multiple actions that influence bone health and overall women’s health. Actions that influence bone density include regulation of calcium absorption and excretion by directly or indirectly modulating PTH, calcitonin, activated vitamin D, and intestinal calcium receptors, and regulation of metabolic bone activity by exerting effects on estrogen receptors located on osteoclasts and osteoblasts. Estrogen produces a transient uncoupling of bone remodeling, slowing resorption and allowing formation to continue until a new equilibrium is established.
Effects.Consensus other potential benefits of cartilage and cardiovascular protection, improvement of vasomotor symptoms, the location of the overall decline in mortality, used and discussed. For debates, often the risk of breast cancer or other side effects of HRT since the beginning of women dissuades. And the potential benefits of HRT should be discussed both in postmenopausal women start treatment before the risk.
Therapeutic Effects.ERT or HRT (estrogen with progestin for women with an intact uterus) is one of two first-line therapies for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that all postmenopausal women receive counseling about HRT, regardless of age. The estrogen effect on bone remodeling appears to operate at all ages and is independent of the course or time since onset of menopause. Recent data suggest that ERT be continued into late life for the maintenance of high bone density. Past estrogen use does not provide long-term benefit for preservation of bone density. However, the optimal age for initiating ERT is controversial because similar bone density benefit was observed in women who began ERT after age 60.
Dosing Regimens. The suggested doses for ERT for osteoporosis prevention are presented. The majority of epidemiologic data about the safety and efficacy of estrogens relate to oral use; conjugated equine estrogens (Premarin) 0.625 mg is the most common dose studied. However, estrogens reduce bone turnover when administered transdermally, percutaneously, subcutaneously, and intravaginally, provided doses are sufficient, Vaginal estrogen creams are not routinely used for systemic purposes due to very short half-lives and minimal effects in the systemic circulation or on the endometrium unless given frequently and for a long period of time. Vaginal estradiol tablets and vaginal rings are also available, but use is limited to treatment of genitourinary symptoms because these dosage forms do not provide protection against osteoporosis or ischemic heart disease.
Continuous hydraulic retention time (daily dose of estrogen and progesterones) seems to be similar to the maintenance of cortical and cancellous bone mass site to cycle hormone replacement therapy. In addition, continuous treatment and leading to 93% adherence to treatment after one year 66 percent of women in the comparison of traditional treatment cycle. Circulation in pre-menopausal therapy is the preferred 5 years, since the delivery of a more physiological hormonal less breakthrough bleeding occurs.
Side Effects and Contraindications. Common adverse effects for HRT include vaginal spotting and bleeding; breast tenderness and breast enlargement, especially in older women; and pedal edema. Compliance with ERT/HRT is an important issue to address. The two most common reasons women discontinue usage are vaginal bleeding and breast tenderness. Women need to be educated about vaginal bleeding and its expected onset, frequency, and duration. Dosage manipulations may be required to control and eliminate vaginal bleeding. If continuous therapy is used and amenorrhea does not develop after 6-12 months, following a workup to rule out abnormal causes of bleeding is suggested; predictable bleeding patterns with cyclic therapy may be preferred for these women. Breast tenderness may decrease with time. Other management options are described. The benefits versus risks, including adverse reactions, must be continually assessed.

Hemochromatosis
Wednesday, February 10th, 2010Hereditary Hemochromatosis is the most common genetic disorder of persons of northern European extraction. Most people with hemochromatosis inherit the condition from their parents. If you inherit two hemochromatosis genes, one from each parent, you will have the condition.
he biggest considerations are not given to medicines containing iron, take consume too much alcohol or Vitamin C. Excessive alcohol consumption, which has been shown to increase not much iron in patients with hemochromatosis, is set at a level of 60g per day. So it is important to remain well below that level. The limit should be 30 grams per day for men and 20g per day for women. If a patient has two copies of C282Y and drinks excessive alcohol consumption, there is a multiplier effect does not affect an additive effect on the absorption of iron.
People are usually born with hemochromatosis; However, symptoms usually appear when a person is an adult. There is usually a defect in a gene, more specifically, HFE, leading to the development of hemochromatosis.
The symptoms are often exhibited by men aged between 30 and 50 and women over 50 years, but some patients may develop problems, as noted on the 20th. When the body has stored 20 grams or more of iron, are evident symptoms of hemochromatosis. This can be up to 4 to 6 years. How women lose iron through menstrual blood loss, they develop organ damage from iron accumulation 15 to 20 years later than men on average.
The genetic defect of hemochromatosis is present at birth, but symptoms rarely occur before adulthood. Hemochromatosis Type I is also known as classical hemochromatosis is caused by mutations of the HFE, a gene located on chromosome 6. A person who inherits the defective gene from both parents may develop hemochromatosis too.
Approximately 1 in 200 to 300 persons of northern European extraction carry two copies of C282Y.In some northern European populations eg Ireland, Iceland and Brittany the percentage of persons carrying one copy of C282Y is higher. Predictably countries settled by northern Europeans eg Australia, South Africa and Canada have high rates of hemochromatosis.
Patients with severe hemochromatosis may present with sepsis, heart failure, failure of the reproductive organs and severe arthritis, joint replacements where necessary. In the worst cases, liver transplantation may be necessary. Men over 55 years with severe hemochromatosis have 200 times the chance of developing liver cancer.
One of the best forms of iron-rich foods are meats that are red. If you try to maintain your weight, or are about, weight gain is concerned, you can with red meats, which are classified as extra lean consume too. One of the best sources of meat in the iron liver.
It is believed that iron may be made to increase production of free radicals and thus increase the inflammation levels n the body, it is possible damage to the pancreas that produce insulin are responsible for the risk of diabetes. Another possibility is that a high level of iron content, and gradually make cells resistant to insulin, thereby reducing the ability of insulin to reduce blood sugar levels.

Benefits Of Vitamin E
Tuesday, February 9th, 2010Oxygen is a natural to maintain the life of one of the main components. Oxygen itself through certain elements within the agencies, become very passive, began to cause damage through the formation of free radicals. This is the so-called oxidative stress. Vitamin E, an anti-oxidant, helping to prevent oxidative stress, thereby preventing cell damage and aging cells.
Body, cholesterol and fat absorption in food substances, which the liver is transferred to various organizations that are stored as fat. Low-density lipoproteins in the blood of their molecules (LDL) is called. When LDL is oxidized, it reacts with cholesterol and fat, oily substance on artery walls, blood flow, resulting in the interruption of hypertension and cardiovascular disease, deposits called plaque.
Vitamin C helps prevent the conversion of cholesterol into plaque, and this is done via the alpha-tocopherol, and not any other form of vitamin E, because the liver is preferably into the bloodstream through a protein called alpha-tocopherol transport protein.
Vitamin E cancer prevention has not been conclusively established effects. The survey of U.S. cancer research center, said vitamin E reduce the risk of cancer associated with intake of plenty. The conflict, in a survey of the Iowa Women's Health Study, most evidence of vitamin E, found a protective effect against breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Therefore, researchers have observed, as well as vitamin E, alone, it may protect against cancer and antioxidant food.
Numerous studies have established the effect of vitamin E in protecting the skin from ultraviolet radiation, whose harmful effects are photodermatitis, allergic-type reactions to UV rays from the sun. Vitamin E, carried out through food or applied topically, have been shown to protect cell membranes of the skin.
In addition to these benefits, vitamin E may protect against Alzheimer’s disease, cataracts (a clouding of the eyes) and pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). In addition, vitamin E may be beneficial in healing wounds and burns, reducing scarring. The ownership of the fight against oxidative stress may be useful for athletes, as their oxygen utilization rate is higher than non-exercising, resulting in increased generation of free radicals.
If there is no proper research results also too early to choose not to seek medical advice to add. However, the general suggested that vegetables and fruits rich in antioxidants, more than.
